Be Mine..Double HJ(SS501)
With a sigh, Hyunjoong leaned forward until his forehead rested on the table and shut his eyes. Behind him the sound of the rest of his bandmates warming up continued, but he shut it out, focusing instead on the coolness of the wood against his skin. He was just not in the mood for singing today…or so he told himself. What it really came down to was that he just didn’t want to face him again. Hyunjoong didn’t think he could stand another second of looking at the other boy’s innocent, open face without blurting out everything he felt.
He had tried everything to avoid an outright confession, but nothing seemed to work. The younger boy seemed to be as clueless as he was innocent and naïve and Hyungjoong found himself at a loss for what to do next. He had tried what seemed like every subtle trick in the book, but he had nothing to show for it.
So now here he was, completely at the end of his rope and about ready to just walk out of the studio so he wouldn’t have to deal with looking at the other boy’s sweet face…
“Hyung? Are you ok?”
Oh shit. Of all the people to ask that question—but no! He had to act normal; he couldn’t give the other boy any reason to suspect something.
With another sigh, he sat back up and, with great effort, opened his eyes to look straight into Hyungjun’s face. “No, Hyungjun, I’m fine.”
“Well, if you’re sure…” the other said, biting his lip. “Come on and warm up with us! We’ve got that performance on Inkigayo tonight that we have to prepare for, so you’d better get started.”
The younger boy moved away and Hyunjoong allowed his head to fall back down to the table, exhausted by the effort of keeping his hands and lips to himself. Damn, why did it have to be Hyungjun of all people?! Why didn’t Youngsaeng or Jungmin care enough to come over and talk to him?
With yet another sigh, he sat up once more and got up from the table. Might as well try and imitate normalcy for another day.
Just then, Youngsaeng walked by, his arm around Kyujong and Hyunjoong made a face when they had passed. Just because Kyujong wasn’t as spacey as Hyungjun, Youngsaeng had managed to snare the younger boy with relative ease. Life just wasn’t fair.
A hand settled on his shoulder and he turned to see Jungmin giving him a sympathetic look. “Still no luck?”
Hyunjoong hung his head with a murmured ‘no’.
Jungmin sighed as well, taking his hand away so he could scrub at his face. “The two of you are giving me more of a headache than the lovebirds over there…isn’t there anything you can do?”
“Like what?” Hyunjoong asked sarcastically. “I’ve tried everything—he’s too damn clueless!”
Silence for a moment, then: “Have you tried just throwing him down and--”
“Ahhhh! I’m not some freakin’ rapist!” It was only after he had shot back at Jungmin that the older boy realized he had said that kind of loud.
“Well…that’s good to know!” Youngsaeng called from across the room. “Now get over here and warm up!”
Cheeks pink, Hyunjoong spared one more moment to give Jungmin a withering glance before turning and joining the other boys before the mirrors on the other side of the room.
Thoughtfully, Jungmin followed.
---
“That was SS501 with their newest song, ‘Fighter’!” the announcer said, fighting to be heard over the screams of hundreds of fangirls.
Nearly shoving each other aside, the boys tumbled offstage and into their dressing room, grabbing for the various bottles of water and tea strewn about. Hyunjoong snatched one up from the floor, not caring whose it really was and gulped it down, sweat pouring off his face.
“Hyung, that was mine!” Hyungjun said, pretending to pout.
But before Hyunjoong could swallow once more and retort, Hyungjun had grabbed a bottle from Youngsaeng’s dresser and walked off with it.
“Dongsaeng, that was mine!” Youngsaeng whined, imitating the younger boy. But when Hyungjun looked at him he grinned and shrugged, showing he really didn’t care.
From across the dressing room, Hyunjoong sat in his chair and watched as Hyungjun downed the last of his water. He couldn’t help but stare at the rippling muscles in the other’s throat, at the way his Adam’s apple bobbed up and down with every swallow, and the way sweat traced shining paths on his smooth skin.
“Still in a dilemma, eh Hyunjoong?” Jungmin’s wide grin and sparkling eyes immediately aroused the older boy’s suspicion as he watched the other sit down. To anyone outside of the group, nothing would have seemed different, but Hyunjoong knew Jungmin well enough to know that it was mischief that lit his eyes right now and a knowing smirk that graced his pretty face.
“Yes,” he replied cautiously, watching the younger boy closely. Damn Jungmin for taking his eyes on Hyungjun…he stole a furtive glance at the object of his affections which only elicited a chuckle from Jungmin.
“I can see that,” he replied, lounging in the other chair like a cat, his own skin minus much of the sweat the rest of them had. Confused and slightly annoyed, Hyunjoong looked back and tried yet again to figure out the puzzle that was Jungmin.
Of all of them, he seemed to be the only straight one, but they had never seen him with a girl. Of course, they had never seen him with a boy either, so that was speculation on their part. He was good-looking, smart, famous, and yet he seemed to care nothing for personal relationships beyond those of friendship. He played tricks and was always laughing, yet there was a darkness in his eyes that they all saw when he sat quietly by himself. He was a walking contradiction, a living paradox and Hyunjoong found his head beginning to spin.
Even more frustrated now, Hyunjoong snapped himself awake quickly and glared at the younger boy. If he couldn’t figure Jungmin out, well he’d just have to watch him extra closely. But Jungmin merely grinned at him again, slipping one hand into his pocket. “Well then, I think I may have just the thing to help you out…” Whipping out an envelope, he held it out for the older boy to take. “Think of it as an early birthday present.”
His sixth sense screaming, Hyunjoong took the envelope gingerly, as if he were afraid it would explode when he touched it. “It won’t bite,” Jungmin assured him before rising and starting to walk away.
Bewildered, Hyunjoong called after him. “Wait! What is this?!”
But the younger boy didn’t even bother to turn around, just waved a hand over his shoulder. “Open it up—I think you can figure it out for yourself.”
Hefting his now empty water bottle in his hand, Hyunjoong considered throwing it at Jungmin, but decided against it at the last minute in favor of opening the mysterious envelope. Letting the bottle fall to the floor, he ripped at the seal and dumped the contents onto his lap.
The only thing inside was a small slip of paper, folded in half and taped shut. Groaning at Jungmin’s ability to make even the simplest task complicated, Hyunjoong tore off the tape and unfolded the paper.
Anthony’s Italian Restaurant7:30, Monday night, April the 3rdReservations for two, table 5
Don’t screw this one up hyung…
Love,Jungmin
Groaning again Hyunjoong shook his head at the younger boy, even as his mind began spinning again. Anthony’s was Hyungjun’s favorite restaurant, they all knew that. But with their busy schedules, the rarely got to go out to eat, much less at someplace nice like Anthony’s. Not to mention the fact that they were famous pop stars now as well.
Glancing up from the note, Hyunjoong looked at Jungmin pointedly, but the taller boy was too busy changing into his street clothes to notice. Head still awhirl, Hyunjoong looked over at Hyungjun and watched as the younger boy began to change out of his performing clothes as well. The muscles in his back contracted and loosened as he pulled his shirt over his head and Hyunjoong couldn’t help but stare at the play of the light across his skin.
Right then, he made up his mind to go through with Jungmin’s plan, the rest of the world be damned. Glancing down at the paper again, he flipped it over and found Anthony’s address and phone number. A plan of his own began formulating in his mind and that very night after they got home, he put it into action.
---
The next week was hell for Hyunjoong. He had called Anthony’s the night they got home and had arranged everything. Jungmin had already requested that the entire restaurant be shut down from 7:30 onward so the two of them could be alone together, and he had even picked SS501s day off for the reservation. How thoughtful.
The day of April 3rd, Hyunjoong would drive out to the restaurant to finalize a few last things before taking Hyungjun out for dinner. Now that everything was ready and the plans were set in concrete, the nerves set in and the older boy found himself afflicted with a case of something akin to stage fright.
Except this was more like ‘Hyunjun Fright’. He was even more nervous around the younger boy than usual and found himself stuttering a heck of a lot more than he used to. He also discovered that he was staring more as well, and kept trying to make it unobtrusive, not wanting to give Hyungjun any cause to suspect something.
If the other boys noticed anything amiss, they said nothing, but more than once Hyunjoong felt Jungmin’s eyes on his back as he wandered listlessly around the house. He tried to avoid Hyungjun as much as possible, maybe even more so than the others. All he wanted was for this week to pass in an easy blur so that he could finally get everything out into the open with Hyungjun.
Meanwhile, worried because his hyung was avoiding him, Hyungjun ran to Jungmin on Saturday, wondering what he had done wrong. But all he got in response was a cryptic, “You’ve done nothing wrong; wait and things will explain themselves.”
Mystified, he had walked away and nearly run smack into Hyunjoong, who held his gaze for a moment longer than was comfortable, before flushing and running off the other way. Standing in the middle of the hallway, Hyungjun chewed his lip thoughtfully, hoping that the feeling in the pit of his stomach meant he was getting an inkling of what was coming.
---
Finally, the day arrived. Monday, April 3rd.
Hyunjoong had been gone for about an hour already, getting a few last minute things ready at Anthony’s while Hyungjun remained at home, innocent and unsuspecting.
Or so Hyunjoong thought.
By this point, the younger boy suspected something, but thankfully it was nothing to the magnitude of what was coming. But still, he wasn’t as clueless as Hyunjoong thought he was. He had been sitting the cough for the greater part of the morning, mindlessly flipping through channels as he tried to appear calm and collected.
Smirking, Jungmin snuck up behind him and clapped his hands down onto the younger boy’s shoulders. With a shriek that could have woken the dead, Hyungjun jumped about a mile in the air and landed amidst a flurry of pillows and blankets.
Whirling around he gasped and chucked a pillow at Jungmin’s face. “Don’t do that!”
But Jungmin merely chuckled and crawled over the back of the couch to sit next to the younger boy. “Something the matter? You’ve been awfully tense all morning,” he said conversationally.
Swallowing, Hyungjun asked. “Was I really that obvious?”
Jungmin looked over at him with a wry grin. “Any time you stoop to watching daytime dramas with ex-musicians in them, I know something’s wrong…”
Cringing, Hyungjun shut the TV off and made a mental note to try something else next time.
“It’s just…well, I don’t know…” he fidgeted and played with the remote, refusing to meet Jungmin’s eyes.
The older boy raised his eyebrows. “Yes?”
“Well, Hyunjoong’s been avoiding me all week and now he’s disappeared. Is something wrong? What did I do this time that could have upset him so much he’d leave entirely? He knows that Youngsaeng and Kyujong sleep late on days off and that you usually do schoolwork for university, so he usually spends at least part of the day with me.” Finishing with a pout that was slightly exaggerated, Hyungjun tugged on the older boy’s arm, trying to wheedle something out of him.
But Jungmin merely chuckled again and stood up. “That’s a pretty good act you’ve got going there. Almost had me. You may want to try that on Hyunjoong later, I know for a fact it’ll work with him.” And with those as his parting words, Jungmin sauntered off towards their study, locking the door behind him as he always did when he was catching up on schoolwork and didn’t want to be disturbed.
Mouth agape, Hyungjun fell back into the pile of pillows he had made on the couch and sighed. Looked like he was going to have to wait for Hyunjoong to get home afterall. With another sigh, he turned the TV back on and picked up where he had left off, watching yet another rendition of the love troubles between a girl and a guy.
---
“Hyungjun…Hyungjun! Get up already!”
Eyes flying open, Hyungjun was startled to come face to face with Hyungjoong. He was also surprised to see that it was dark outside. Glancing over at the TV, he saw that it was still on and deduced he must have fallen asleep while watching dramas earlier.
“You finally awake?” there was a hint of a smile in Hyunjoong’s voice and Hyungjun grinned in response, feeling for the first time in a week that things were returning to normal between them. “Good. Get dressed, I’ve got a surprise for you.”
Getting excited, Hyungjun jumped up from the couch and flung his arms around his hyung’s neck, giving him a quick hug before bounding down the hall towards the room he shared with Kyujong. (Well, used to share.) “I’ll be ready in five minutes, hyung!” he called over his shoulder.
A little startled by the younger boy’s enthusiastic reaction, Hyunjoong felt nonetheless happy that he was receiving such attention. Sitting down the couch in the warm spot Hyungjun had just recently vacated, he smiled to himself and touched his neck gently. It seemed that things were off to a good start.
Less than five minutes later Hyungjun’s door opened and he came back down the hall, dressed in a pair of tight jeans and a black wife beater. Feeling Hyunjoong’s eyes on him, he glanced down at the floor, scuffing at the carpet with his black boots. “Is this too casual?” he asked quietly, suddenly shy.
Hyunjoong swallowed hard, trying to find his voice. “No, it’s just fine.” When Hyungjun finally looked up he reached out his hand to the younger boy and lead him out the front door and down to his car, stealing sidelong glances the whole way.
“You’re driving, hyung?” Hyungjun asked, staring in surprise at the sleek, black convertible. Usually the boys had drivers to take them where they wanted to go, despite the fact they could all drive.
Hyunjoong grinned, opening the passenger-side door so the younger boy could get in. “I figured it would be more appropriate, considering what we’re doing tonight.” He shut the door and walked around to the other side of the car, getting in and starting the engine.
Hyungjun gave him a confused look even as they pulled out of the parking garage beneath their apartment complex. “What we’re doing tonight?”
But Hyunjoong merely flashed him a smile and continued driving. With an impatient sigh, Hyungjun reached out and flipped on the radio, going through the stations until he found a song he knew the older boy hated and turning it up. Satisfied, he sat back in his seat and stared out the window, watching the flashing lights of the city’s night-life go by in a blur.
Glancing over, Hyunjoong allowed himself another smile as he indulged the younger boy and merely let the song play. Now that the night was actually here, and everything was in place, he felt a lot more confident. The nervousness he had felt all week was gone, replaced by a great sense of relief that everything was finally going to be out in the open, for better or for worse.
Happily, he maneuvered through traffic and only switched the radio station when commercials came on. Brat-like, Hyungjun reached out and switched it back, bumping up the volume another notch so the commercial for car insurance echoed louder inside the car.
But once more Hyunjoong merely smiled and ignored it, knowing that Hyungjun wasn’t really mad and that he was just trying to make up for his lack of inclusion in the plans. It would all be worked out in another few hours. Besides, the younger boy was cute when he was a brat; Hyunjoong wouldn’t ever admit it to anyone, but bratty Hyungjun turned him on.
And so they passed the rest of the carried in silence except for the songs and commercials Hyungjun deigned annoying enough to play loudly. Finally, when they pulled into the parking lot, Hyunjoong shut off the radio for good and parked the car, grinning from ear to ear as they got out and the younger boy’s face lit up.
“Anthony’s!” he exclaimed, turning to Hyunjoong. “Did you get us reservations hyung?” His face was a mask of excitement and Hyunjoong couldn’t help himself as he slipped an arm around the younger boy’s waist to lead him inside the restaurant.
“Not only that…” he murmured, pressing his mouth to Hyungjun’s ear as they stepped inside. “But we’ve got the whole place to ourselves tonight.”
Wide-eyed, Hyungjun looked around and found the older boy’s statement to be true. They really were all alone in the place.
A moment later a waiter stepped out from a side door and bowed to them, offering to show them to their table with a knowing look at Hyunjoong, who nodded and followed, still with his arm around Hyungjun’s waist. The younger boy was grinning widely beside him, long legs keeping step easily with the older boy as they followed the waiter. Even though he still didn’t know quite what was going on, he felt more at ease now that he was somewhere familiar and they were eating dinner. He had been unsure earlier when all Hyunjoong would say was ‘what we’re doing tonight’, but now things were ok because it was Anthony’s, his favorite place in the world besides home.
When they reached the table, Hyunjoong pulled out a chair for the younger boy, who sat and quickly hid his blushing face behind a menu. Later, after they had ordered and the waiter had gone away with their menus, he finally met Hyunjoong’s eyes, startled at the intensity that was radiating from them.
Slightly unsure once again, he looked away and out the window, allowing himself to get lost in the view of the city’s skyline lit up by blue and white lights. The city truly was beautiful at night and Hyungjun found himself completely taken in by it, despite having seen it many times before.
Hyunjoong watched the younger boy with a small smile dancing around the corners of his mouth. It was the same old city with the same old lights and yet still, Hyungjun stared as if it were his first time seeing it. He always saw things with fresh eyes and a child-like wonder; it was one of the many things that made Hyunjoong love him so much.
Hyungjun didn’t even realize the older boy’s eyes were on him until their food came and he was forced to tear his gaze away from the city and its incandescence. He met Hyunjoong’s smoldering gaze for the second time that evening and flushed yet again, quickly digging into his food and busying himself with the Italian flavors bursting in his mouth.
Hyunjoong smiled again and ate as well, albeit more slowly, as he watched Hyungjun.
“Mmm…this is so good hyung…” he finally said, pausing to wipe his mouth off. “Thank you so much…” He brought his fork to his mouth once more and glanced at his hyung shyly.
Hyunjoong nodded. “They’ve always had good food here. And you’re welcome; it’s my pleasure.”
Without knowing why, Hyungjun ducked his head again and went on eating. His cheeks were burning tonight and they wouldn’t stop! He was beginning to get worried, wondering if the older boy noticed anything.
And of course, he did. But what Hyungjun didn’t know was that his reactions to everything that had passed between them were what gave Hyunjoong the green light to fulfill his plans and order dessert when their waiter returned.
“I’ll order for us, okay?” he asked.
Hyungjun nodded, knowing Hyunjoong was aware of what he liked and did not like. The older boy ordered the restaurant’s famous gourmet ice cream, with plenty of strawberries and whipped cream of course. Hyungjun grinned as he watched the waiter walk away, not noticing the meaningful look that passed between him and Hyunjoong.
“Strawberries! They have fresh strawberries?” he asked eagerly, knowing the berries were out of season.
“Of course! Imported from warmer climates, just for you,” Hyunjoong replied, only half-joking.
Hyungjun felt the color rising in his cheeks once more, but didn’t have the chance to look away as dessert arrived. He was just about to pick up his spoon and dig in when a glitter caught in the corner of his eye, something sparkling just out of eyeshot.
Curious, he leaned in closer, not hearing Hyunjoong’s sharp intake of breath. The older boy watched with nervous anticipation, chewing his lip much like Hyungjun did when he was thinking.
“What…” the younger boy murmured, gazing down at his dessert.
There, perched on top of delicious-looking mound of strawberries and whipped cream, was a ring; a simple golden band.
Startled, and not knowing quite what to say, he looked up at the older boy, mouth slightly open. “F-for me?” he finally managed to get out.
Hyungjoong nodded, reaching out and plucking the ring off the top of the dessert. He held it in his right hand, reaching for Hyungjun with his left. “Will you let me?” he asked quietly.
Swallowing, Hyungjun nodded and held out a trembling left hand, watching as the older boy slipped the band onto his third finger, pressing it firmly into place. Looking up so he met Hyungjun’s gaze, Hyunjoong leaned down and kissed the ring, softly tracing his lips over the younger boy’s hand and holding his gaze all the while.
Hyungjun felt his hand tremble even worse, but he could do nothing to stop it. He was being sucked into Hyunjoong’s powerful gaze, from which there was no escape. He felt himself drowning in their dark depths, but he did not care. For the first time in his life, he felt warm, safe, and secure.
“I love you,” Hyunjoong said quietly, finally lifting his head. “Will you be mine?”
Biting his bottom lip, Hyungjun nodded slowly, fighting to keep in the tears that were threatening to spill out of his eyes. With a small smile, Hyunjoong leaned across the table and touched their lips together, feeling an electric shock run through both their bodies as he did so.
Hyungjun’s breath caught in his throat as he felt the older boy caress his lips. Reaching up with his hand, he brushed against Hyunjoong’s cheek, loving the way his smooth skin felt under his fingertips.
Hyunjoong chose that moment to break their kiss and as he pulled back, he rested his forehead against Hyungjun’s smiling at the younger boy, who smiled in return, the hand with the ring on it running through the older boy’s long hair.
Hyunjoong’s smile suddenly turned into a smirk and he turned back to their neglected desserts, scooping up some of the whipped cream on one of his fingers.
“Hyung?” Hyungjun asked, speaking for the first time since he had picked up the ring.
But Hyunjoong merely reached up and traced his lips, coating them with whipped cream. He then leaned in and kissed the younger boy once again, licking off the sweet cream in the process.
A small moan escaped Hyungjun’s lips and he hesitantly slipped out his tongue to meet the older boy’s, tasting sweet sugar as he did. Hyunjoong quickly latched onto his tongue and suckled it into his waiting mouth, licking away the last of the whipped cream until only a memory of sweetness remained.
They parted several minutes later to find their ice cream melting in the bowls and the whipped cream reduced to nothing more than runniness. With a pout, Hyungjun looked at Hyunjoong, wanting another dessert.
With a chuckle the older boy nodded and stole one last kiss before signaling for the waiter to bring them another dessert, this time just whipped cream and strawberries.
Hopefully this would be the first of many more to come.
